How Rutgers TEACH Volunteers Used STEM to Brighten Hospital Stays
At TEACH (Together Educating All Children in Hospitals), we’re always inspired by the dedication and creativity of our student volunteers. This spring, our amazing team at Rutgers University–New Brunswick has gone above and beyond to make science unforgettable for young patients at CSH Mountainside.
Earlier this season, the Rutgers TEACH branch brought an exciting, hands-on module to the hospital: the Easter Egg Rocket Experiment. This STEM activity combined colorful creativity with real science, allowing children to explore chemical reactions in a safe and engaging way. The energy in the room was electric—so much so, the volunteers knew they had to keep the momentum going.
With the remainder of their chapter’s budget, the students developed approximately 60 take-home experiment kits for the children at CSH Mountainside. Each Easter Egg Kit includes all the materials needed to recreate the rocket experiment at home or from a hospital bed. But the Rutgers team didn’t stop there. They also packaged the kits with spring-themed toys and handmade cards filled with uplifting messages, every detail thoughtfully designed to spark smiles and encourage exploration.
This initiative is a beautiful example of TEACH’s mission in action: using science to bring joy, learning, and a sense of wonder to children facing hospital stays. We’re so proud of our Rutgers University volunteers for leading with heart and delivering education in such a creative, compassionate way.
